Surf spots of capbreton

Capbreton surf spots are beachbreaks ( the wave breaks on the sand, not on rocks ) that change with the seasons, with the years. Vintages are not all equal and waves sometimes disappear for a while before reappearing at another location. Indeed, the sandbanks are constantly moving and demending on the waves, tides, wind, they evolve more or less quality in the eyes of the surfer.
The following descriptions are not fixed and describe the general characteristics of the spot. Your job to adjust your surf session depending on the size of the swell , tide ... and the season ! The following beaches are classified from the port to the south. We have deliberately chosen to overlook the beach of Notre Dame (on the other side of the harbor) that is rarely surfed (end of the sandbank of the southern Hossegor beach )

Up North, waves of 4 m in Hossegor and in the South of the port, protected beaches of Capbreton with waves from 1m to 2m.
The main advantages of Capbreton:
  • Different sizes of waves for the same swell.
  • Surfing fo all levels.
  • Spots with a huge potential internationally known.
  • Smaller waves when it's heavy.
  • Few or no current at all (once the line up passed).
  • Safety feeling because close to the city center.
  • Extraordinary setting, with the view of the blockhaus, the town, the dunes, the port.
  • Surf 365 jours / year!

Central Beach

Photo
It is the first beach south from the port.
Surf spot protected from heavy swell, it allowed for years to many young Capbretonnais to learn in ideal conditions with small waves. The development work on the beach (enhancement of rocks) to face the coastal erosion three years ago have changed the spot that now operates only during heavy swells or storms and takes the form of a violent shorebreak .
In summer this beach has become happiness for swimmers who have thus access to a much less hectic portion of the Landes coast! Works half tide / low tide.

The Prévent

Photo
In front of the hotel Baya and the CERS (Sports Rehabilitation Center). This beach has also been substantially modified after the enhancement work. After two years without waves, the sand bank is reformed gradually and offers some nice peaks when the swell is generous. The spot is sheltered from large waves and provides a fallback when other beaches saturate.
Good small surf spot for kids when waves allow to surf everywhere else. Works at half tide / low tide.

Beach of Savannah  (Santocha)

Photo
Beach with the highest potential for surfing. Direct access from the back deck of the Surf School. It even filters the big swells but traps smaller if the period of the waves is not too large (number of seconds between the passage of two waves). The last rocky spikes of the north beach allows the grip of a sandbank that offers excellent rights. In general , this is a spot " multi-peak " which is pretty random but offers everyone the chance to have a nice wave .
The perfect combo for beginners with small swells during the summer.
Works at all tides when the waves are bigger than 1m (exept when big coefficients)

Beach La Piste

Photo
From the bunkers to the south, on about 400m. Engaged spot when the swell is heavy, with waves always a little larger and more powerful as we get further away from the port of Capbreton. It captures well the swell but rarely provides sharp peaks. The waves are fast and hollow when the size exceeds 1m.
If you like big barels, welcome to La piste!
Works with all tides if the waves are higher than 1m (except with big coefficients).

Beach The Océanides

Photo
Still further south ... and beyond to Labenne (next town ) . The ocean regains its maximum power almost in contact with the southern beaches of Capbreton. Perfect when the swell is small or medium , with sand banks that can offer beautiful peaks and less quick bars.
When the waves get bigger, barels show up!
Wilder beaches, less accessible so less crowded.
Works with all tides if the waves are higher than 1m (except with big coefficients).
