A connoisseur’s secret...

The best spots

Capbreton

Capbreton’s surf spots are beachbreaks (the wave breaks on the sand, not on the rocks) that change with the seasons and the years.

This changing landscaping isn’t the same year-on-year, and waves sometimes disappear for a while before reappearing in another spot. In fact, sandbanks are constantly on the move, and depending on swells, tides and wind, they will evolve and be of more or less quality in the eyes of the surfer.

The following descriptions are therefore not set in stone and describe the general characteristics of the spot. It’s up to you to adapt them to the size of the swell, the tide… and the season!

The following beaches are listed from the harbour southwards. We’ve deliberately left out the beach of Notre Dame (on the other side of the port), which is rarely surfed (end of the sandbank on Hossegor’s south beach).

Central beach — Capbreton

The first beach south of the harbour.

A surfing spot protected from heavy swells. For years, it has provided many young Capbretonnais with the opportunity to try their hand at surfing in ideal conditions with small waves. Three years ago, development work (raising the rocky groins) to deal with coastal erosion radically altered the spot, which now only functions during heavy swells or storms, and takes the form of a violent shorebreak.

In summer, this beach has become a delight for bathers, who now have access to a much less turbulent stretch of the Landes coastline!

Le Prévent

In front of the Baya hotel and the CERS (Center for Sports Rehabilitation).

This beach has also undergone major changes following work to raise the groynes. After two years without waves, the sandbar is gradually reforming and offers some nice peaks when the swell is generous. This spot is sheltered from big swells and offers a fallback solution when the other beaches are saturated.

A good spot for kids when the waves allow you to surf everywhere else.

La Savane beach (Santocha)

The beach with the greatest surfing potential. Direct access from the back terrace of the surf school.

It still filters large swells, but captures smaller ones if the wave period is not too long (duration in seconds between the passage of two waves). The last rocky spur to the north of the beach gives way to a sandbar that provides an excellent right hander in good years.

In general, it’s a “multi-pick” spot that’s fairly random but offers everyone the chance of a great wave.

The perfect compromise for beginners during small summer swells.

La Piste beach

From the blockhouses southwards, for around 400m.

A committed spot whenever there’s a swell, with waves getting bigger and more powerful as you move away from Capbreton harbor.

It catches the swell well, but rarely offers well-defined peaks. Waves are fast and hollow as soon as they exceed 1m in size.

If you like big, tight tubes, welcome to La Piste!

Beach of Océanides

Further south… and beyond to Labenne (next town).

The ocean is at its most powerful when it comes into contact with the beaches south of Capbreton. Perfect when the swell is small or medium, with sandbanks offering nice peaks and fewer fast bars.

As soon as the waves get bigger, the tubes are there for the taking!

Wilder beaches, less accessible and therefore less crowded.

Hossegor

Renowned the world over, Hossegor’s fast, hollow waves attract surfers from all horizons. This is also where the Quicksilver Pro France is held every year.

Hossegor beach stretches over three kilometers. Although it’s a single stretch of sand, the beach features varoous spots with very distinct conditions.

They offer numerous surfing possibilities for all levels, depending on swell conditions: there’s something for every taste, from beachbreak to tubes.

Plage Sud (South beach)

Located north of Capbreton harbor, it consists of a wide sandbank which, depending on the season, offers smaller, easier waves (less hollow) than most other spots.

It’s a wave that’s easy to access, with rights and lefts that unwind more or less well.

Beware of side currents which then flow offshore when the swell is strong to the north, which rarely happens in summer.

La Nord (North beach)

The spot of La Nord starts just offshore (150m) of Hossegor’s central beach and extends northwards. It’s a big surf spot that rarely works below 2m, and comes into its own at 3m. It’s relatively easy to get to, thanks to a channel opposite the Plage Centrale, which means you don’t have to pass a solid bar.

Beware: the wave is far away and often looks smaller than it really is.
But make no mistake, the Nord is a powerful wave that displaces a lot of water: you need a big board, to be in good shape, and a very good level to ride it!

It’s a guaranteed spectacle on big days!

Central beach — Hossegor

Spot close to the shore, rather a hollow and somewhat random shorebreak that becomes interesting when the swell is big enough.

Waves break or are dampened (slowed down) by the sandbank of La Nord, then reform at the shore in short, fast sections.

There’s little bottom, so watch out for sandy landings.

La Gravière

The Quiksilver Pro France surf spot. An ultra-powerful wave that breaks just a few meters away from shore.

This is the reform of La Nord, some 200m north of the Central Beach. Tubes and spectacle are guaranteed.

No bottom, hence dangerous!

Les Culs Nuls

The last beach in Hossegor before the commune of Seignosse, even further north.

The Culs Nuls beach is a surfing spot accessible to surfers of many levels which catches the swell well, making it interesting when the waves are less than 2m.

It offers peaks that move with the seasons and the tides. It’s ideal for intermediate level surfers when waves are 1m high, with peaks often spaced out and relatively easy rowing access.

It’s a different world as soon as the swell picks up, but it holds up better than the Seignosse spots.

Seignosse

Seignosse’s beaches stretch over 6.5 kilometers facing the Atlantic Ocean. They are renowned for their length and their numerous surf spots.

Like Capbreton and Hossegor, Seignosse offers spots with varied conditions, internationally recognized for their quality—so much so that they host professional competitions every year.

Come check them out!

Les Estagnots beach

Seignosse’s first beach from the south. Also the historic site of numerous pro competitions.

Easy-to-access beach with a large parking lot on the dune, there are many spots to discover as the tide comes in.

In the summer, it’s a wave machine during small swells. Ideal spot for all levels, depending on wave size. Rapidly saturated when swell exceeds 2m.

Les Bourdaines beach

Another good spot at Les Bourdaines, with the southern option offering at least one or two peaks, and the central option also offering good plateaus up to the foundations of the historic wharf (300m to the north).

The spots receive the same swell conditions as the Estagnots beach and saturate above 2m.

Ideal in summer for small and medium conditions.

Le Penon et l’Agréou

A massive beach that, paradoxically, has been offering fewer good spots in recent years. Worth keeping an eye on, though, because when it’s good, it’s really really good!
